AP – LA transit board OKs light rail extension to Azusa

LOS ANGELES — A Southern California transportation board has approved up to $810 million for an 11-mile light rail line reaching cities in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority board's unanimous vote on Thursday allows construction of the Gold Line extension to begin in June.

It will be the first new rail project funded by Measure R, the transportation sales tax approved by county voters in 2008.

The line, which currently ends in Pasadena, will include stops in the cities of Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa.
